The Markets
Stocks closed mixed in the last session of the week as traders continue to gyrate back and forth between growth and value stocks. The S&P 500 Index shed just less than a tenth of one percent, giving up gains charted earlier in the session. Short-term resistance at the declining 20-day moving average remains intact, providing uncertainty to the short-term trend. The intermediate path, however, remains positive defined by rising trendline support at 4100 and trendline resistance at 4300. Momentum indicators are still angled lower, however, downside pressures appear to be alleviating, as indicated by the narrowing of the MACD histogram. The type of mean reversion that was observed in the past few sessions is typical of pre-holiday periods, therefore initial indications point to portfolio managers rebalancing their books ahead of the holiday weekend coming up in the US, as well as month end.
