The Markets
Stocks jumped to close out the final trading session of the week as investors reacted favourably to comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The S&P 500 Index gained just less than nine-tenths of one percent, moving above an important psychological milestone at 4500. Yet again, the mid-point to the approximately 200-point rising trading range between 4400 and 4600 is being tested, a barrier that investors have been hesitant to surpass since May, suggesting waning investor enthusiasm. Momentum indicators, while holding above their middle lines, are still negatively diverging from price, also a sign of waning upside momentum. With the month of August almost complete, the volatility that is typical and notorious for this time of year is noticeably absent. There is one month left in this period of volatility and we will be watching closely how the cards are dealt as we look towards some of the core cyclical bets that we desire to be in this fall.
Today, in our Market Outlook to subscribers, we discuss the following:
- Weekly look at the large-cap benchmark
- The jump in small-cap stocks
- The desire to become more equally weighted in equity allocations ahead of the end of the quarter
- Margin Debt
- US International Trade
