The change in employment for May lagged the seasonal norm for this spring month as weak results in the energy, construction, wholesale/retail trade, leisure/hospitality, and federal government sectors weighed on the aggregate tally.

Payrolls rose by 726,000, or 0.46% (NSA), in May, which is the fifth weakest performance five months into the year in the past four decades, lagging, primarily, the recessionary results that were recorded surrounding the Great Financial Crisis, as well as the run-up to the pandemic downturn.  The average change for this time of year is a rise of 0.7%.
