Sector Tendencies During Presidential Election Years
Below are seasonal charts of the stock market sectors during Presidential Election year.
For the most part, sectors follow the same pattern as in average years, except for Technology and Materials. Technology and Materials deviated significantly from their typical path after the month of May. Even after discounting the year 2000 in which the Tech bubble popped, the pattern remains the same for Technology.
Best performers during election years: Staples, Energy, and Financials. Even with erratic activity throughout the year, Financials have rallied significantly after presidential elections.
