The Markets

Stocks drifted mildly higher on Thursday to start off the new month and quarter as the recent rise in interest rates took a pause.  The S&P 500 Index edged higher by two-tenths of one percent, managing to recover from levels around the upside open gap (a zone of support) charted a week ago Monday between 7650 and 7690.  Previous resistance remains as implied support at 7620, a threshold tested at the lows of Thursday’s session.  The moves in recent days have clouded the contention of the start of a new ultra-short-term rising trend following the declining path that has been charted since the middle of August. Ultimately, the consolidation that the benchmark has been subjected to for months continues.  While beyond what has historically been the weakest two-week stretch of the year at the end of September, volatility in the market tends to remain heightened into the month of October, therefore caution has been appropriate, but we have been pushing back against the negativity that is typical for this timeframe (see our September 18th report).  We continue to examine what may be the appropriate stance in equity positioning for the month of October, but we have started to de-risk in our Super Simple Seasonal Portfolio (trimming our commodity/oil exposure).   Subscribers can stay on top of our thinking and what we are watching in our regular reports, as well as view what we are targeting in our list of market segments to either Accumulate or Avoid.

Today, in our Market Outlook to subscribers, we discuss the following:

  • Dollar imposing a headwind from another angle as near-term rate pressures ease
  • Technology at an all-time high
  • Weekly Jobless Claims and the health of the labor market
  • A look ahead at Friday’s Nonfarm Payroll report and what to expect of the results moving forward
  • The weakest spring/summer construction season since the Great Financial Crisis and the investment implications (the stocks we are focused on)
