The Markets
Stocks closed mildly lower on the eve of the start of third quarter earnings season on Wednesday. The S&P 500 Index shed just less than a quarter of one percent, ending below short-term resistance at the 20-day moving average by the closing bell. The short-term trend continues to be characterized by lower-highs and lower-lows. Resistance at the 50-day moving average remains threatening as the intermediate hurdle starts to flatline for the first time since November of last year. Momentum indicators for the large-cap benchmark remain below their middle lines, characteristic of a bearish trend.
