The Markets
A slight recovery following Thursday’s brutal selloff had major equity benchmarks end in the green to close the week. The S&P 500 Index rebounded by around three-tenths one percent, bouncing from the July lows that were tested in the prior session. On Thursday, the benchmark showed sharp rejection from declining trendline resistance from the past month around 7700, breaking back below the trading range support at 7620 in the process. The 7400 target that we had been suggesting based on the appearance of a head-and-shoulders pattern was hit and exceeded as the benchmark moves back to the summer lows. Now comes the healing and, following Thursday’s pronounced downturn, its could take some time given how skittish traders may have become. The index remains within the cloud of major moving averages and the 200-day moving average is now up to bat (although we would prefer to reference the 50-week moving average – 7242). As noted in our recent chart books, there are segments following recent price action that we haven’t wanted to be exposed to, including Semiconductor and various technology industries, but the market has provided rotation opportunities that allowed us to maintain our overall equity exposure.
